Buy on AmazonThe Barista Express Impress is Breville's updated take on the machine that made home espresso mainstream. It keeps the built-in conical burr grinder, the 54mm portafilter, PID temperature control and the front pressure gauge, and adds an assisted tamping mechanism that applies a consistent 22 lb with a barista-style twist, plus intelligent dosing that measures the last grind and corrects the next one. The grinder also gains finer adjustment, 25 settings versus 16.
Ideal for
A beginner who wants one complete machine, the shortest possible learning curve, and does not want to buy a separate grinder.
Look elsewhere if
Someone with a tight counter, or who wants the 58mm standard and its aftermarket, or who wants to brew and steam at the same time.

Scored against the other machines in this catalogue. How we score.
If you have read about the standard Barista Express, this is that machine with two of its weak points addressed. The first is tamping: new users tamp unevenly and get channelled, sour shots, and the Impress puck system removes that variable by levering a consistent 22 lb tamp with a slight twist to polish the puck face. The second is dosing — the machine now weighs what the last grind delivered and nudges the next dose toward target, which shortens the dialling-in that frustrates beginners.
Everything else is familiar Barista Express: a real 9-bar extraction with pre-infusion, digital PID, an analog gauge that turns extraction into something you can read, and the full accessory kit in the box. It is a large machine, the 54mm portafilter still has a smaller aftermarket than the 58mm standard, and at 4.2 stars the reviews carry the usual Breville note about out-of-warranty repair cost.
Against the plain Barista Express, pay the difference if you value the assisted tamp and finer grinder; against the La Specialista Arte Evo, this has the better grinder and the tighter PID.

The honest bit
Summarised from the 1,103 Amazon ratings
Reviewers consistently praise the assisted tamp and dosing for making good shots repeatable early on, and several report two-plus years of daily use. The most common criticism is a machine failing after the warranty with a costly repair quote, which recurs across Breville models. Milk steaming from the single thermocoil is called good but slower than a dual boiler.
It is still making the same consistent coffee it did when I first got it. The assisted tamp made learning much faster.
It strikes a great balance between doing the fiddly parts for you and still letting you make the espresso yourself.
Used it every day, cleaned and descaled regularly, and it failed just outside warranty. The repair quote was not worth it.
