The short version

The Bambino Plus strips espresso down to the two things that matter most — temperature and milk — and does both unusually well for its size. Its ThermoJet heater is at brew temperature in three seconds, and its steam wand textures milk to your chosen temperature and consistency without you touching it. There is no grinder inside, which is exactly why it is only 7.7 inches wide.

Ideal for

Small kitchens, milk-drink drinkers, and anyone who already owns a decent burr grinder or is happy to buy one.

Look elsewhere if

Someone who wants a complete single-purchase setup, or who wants to tinker with every variable of the shot.

The full review

The Bambino Plus is the most misunderstood machine in this comparison. People look at the price, notice there is no grinder, and assume it is a lesser Barista Express. It is not: it is a different trade. Breville put the money into the parts of the machine you cannot upgrade later — the heating system and the steam wand — and left the grinder to you.

The ThermoJet heater is the headline. Three seconds from cold to brew temperature is not marketing rounding; it fundamentally changes how the machine fits into a morning. There is no ritual of switching it on and waiting. Combined with digital PID control and low-pressure pre-infusion, the shots come out at the right temperature from the very first one of the day, which is something far more expensive machines struggle with.

The automatic steam wand is the other reason to buy it. You set a temperature and a texture level, drop the wand in the jug, and walk away; it stops itself. The microfoam it produces is genuinely good enough for latte art, and it removes the single hardest skill in home coffee from the equation. For a lot of people that alone is worth the machine.

What you give up is control and a grinder. There is no pressure gauge, no dose adjustment, no grind setting — those live in whatever grinder you buy, and you will need to buy one, which changes the real cost of ownership. The 4.1-star average is also the lowest here, and the critical reviews are worth reading: this machine is unforgiving of bad grind, and people who pair it with a cheap blade grinder tend to blame the machine.

The honest bit

Pros and cons

What we like

  • At brew temperature in 3 seconds — no warm-up ritual at all
  • Automatic steam wand produces latte-art-grade microfoam hands-free
  • Only 7.7 inches wide; fits kitchens where nothing else here will
  • PID control and pre-infusion, the same brewing fundamentals as pricier machines
  • 2-year warranty, double the Barista Express and Gaggia

What to consider

  • No grinder — budget for a good one, or the machine will disappoint you
  • No pressure gauge and no dose control; very little to adjust
  • Lowest average rating in this comparison (4.1 stars)
  • No hot water outlet for americanos or tea
  • Light at 11 lb — it can shift on the counter when you lock the portafilter in

What owners report

Summarised from the 2,408 Amazon ratings

Positive reviewers consistently praise the small footprint, the near-instant heat-up and the automatic milk frother, with several describing a year or more of daily use without problems. The negative reviews cluster around consistency: the most detailed one-star review describes the machine as temperamental, and this pattern is worth taking seriously — it is a machine that magnifies whatever your grinder does, for better or worse.

wow i got a deal!

I've had 1 or 2 cups of espresso + steamed milk out of this thing daily for a year and it has performed almost flawlessly with no issues.

This is a great machine

It's not only beautiful, has a small footprint and doesn't take up too much counter space.

Most frustratingly temperamental coffee machine EVER!

I'm not predisposed to negative reviews but this overly expensive coffee machine is awful.
